Carmen's Travels Europe Photo Essays

Madrid, Spain is the first place I have visited in Europe. Even if you are just stopping over or on a short layover, you can still see the beauty of Madrid. Here are the 5 things you can do and the must-see places in Madrid.

1. Palacio Real de Madrid

This is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family in Madrid. The current Royal Family is not there, however they have stunning displays open for visitors.

2. La Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena

This is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid. See also their museum, Museo de la Catedral de la Almudena y Subida a la Cupula.

3. Plaza de la Independencia

This is a central and busy roundabout at the entrance to Retiro Park. It is at the intersection of Calle de Alcala, Calle de Alfonso XII, Calle de Serrano, Calle de Salustiano Olozaga, and Paseo de Mexico. However, in the center, you will see one of the important symbols of Madrid, Puerta de Alcala. It is beautiful and provides several photo-ops.

4. Plaza Murillo

You can relax, sit, watch people, and just enjoy the surrounding. Check out the Museo Nacional del Prado (left side) and the Real Jardin Botanico (right side).

5. Plaza Mayor

It is the central plaza in Madrid, located only a few blocks away from Puerta del Sol.
